As we dive into the details of transforming your bathroom, we invite you to discover how our passion and expertise can elevate your home's beauty and functionality. So sit back, relax, and let's dive deep into the art of bathroom remodeling together!

Consultation and Design Process

In the arena of home improvement, few projects offer as much potential for transformation as bathroom remodeling. Whether you're seeking to modernize an outdated space, enhance functionality, or create a spa bathroom oasis, the right bathroom remodeling project can make a significant impact on your home and it's value.

As one of Eugene, Oregon leading companies that remodel bathrooms, we understand the importance of finding a dedicated bathroom remodeling contractor that partners design as an intricate part to guiding you through every step of the process.

This work begins with the discovery call and consultation. We want to hear all about your space, what you want to remodel, and what design ideas you have. This is also a great time to request references, our contractor license and insurance information, and get a general sense of our communication style.

Understanding Your Needs

When homeowners choose a bathroom remodeling company, the level of customer service can vary wildly along with the bathroom renovations services they provide. Some bathroom remodeling contractors will have a consultation and some will only provide straight bids with one onsite visit. We want to have a firm understanding of your needs and budget, that's why we have created a process with every potential client that calls Motley to inquiry about bathroom remodeling.

Initial Discovery Call

Before embarking on any bathroom remodeling project, it's crucial to begin with a thorough understanding of your needs and preferences. This can be a bathroom remodel that includes just a little refreshing or a more expansive remodel. This is why our process always starts with an initial discovery call, where we gather general information about the age of your home, the bathroom's general condition, and scope of the bathroom renovation you're wanting to complete. We also go over the services offered and can provide examples of past work. This allows us to better understand your goals and timeline, laying the foundation for a successful collaboration and a more efficient onsite consultation.

Onsite Consultation

Following the initial call, we schedule an onsite consultation to get a first hand look into the specifics of your bathroom remodeling project. Our experienced bathroom remodeling contractor and project coordinator will meet with you to discuss any design services needed and analyze the condition of your existing bathroom.

This is where we take measurements, discuss bathroom remodel plans, and then organize a rough scope of work to base our cost estimate and written contract on. This consultation serves as an opportunity to assess the scope of work and provide a general bid for the project, ensuring transparency and clarity from the outset.

If you are working with a bathroom designer and have your bathroom floor plans and fixtures and finishes selected, this is the meeting we will need to see them so we can give an accurate estimate.

If your project is on the smaller side, like a shower or tub remodel, this onsite consult will be enough for us to put together a comprehensive bid to present.

Getting Bids and Compare Prices

Once we have completed your on-site consultation we will prepare your bid for the full remodel scope. This is the time to compare prices from bathroom remodeling contractors. Make sure to compare the scope of work listed in the contract bid from these bathroom remodeling companies to ensure you are comparing prices and that the bathroom remodelers have anticipated all aspects of the bathroom renovations.

Designing Your Dream Bathroom

For those seeking a truly customized bathroom remodel or even need a little help pulling the little details together, we offer onsite design consultations and full bathroom design services to bring your vision to life. Questions we get asked as Bathroom remodeling contractors

As local contractors we often get asked questions from clients who are starting to look into bathroom remodeling contractors. Here are some common questions we get asked.

Cost of Hiring One of the Best Bathroom Remodeling Companies

Renovations in bathrooms are less expensive than kitchens, but they are an investment. Average renovation costs for a full remodel range in price from $6500 to $68,000, with an overall national cost at $11,500. Factors such as choice of materials, size and the extent of renovations affect the final total cost of each bathroom remodel.

Will remodeling my bathroom add value to my home?

Is it true that bathroom remodels are an excellent investment for the home? Expert report estimates that remodeling of the bathrooms will bring an ROI of around 65%. Some areas it is a great deal more.

How long does it take to remodel a bathroom?

Standard bathrooms renovations usually take three to four weeks with bigger bathrooms taking four to six weeks.

The factors that impact how long a bathroom remodel can take include expansion of square footage, updating plumbing, material lead time, and available sub contractors.

What is the most expensive part of a bathroom remodel?

For bath remodels, most labor costs typically amount to 20–45%. This is for the modest to mid-level bathroom remodels. However for larger scope remodels, labor cost will be 45-65% of the total project. This is usually due to the amount of custom features and high end plumbing fixtures and finished being installed into the bathroom.

How do I save on my bathroom renovation?

  1. We always suggest having your design clearly laid out before you seek bids from general contractors. This will allow you to compare multiple contractors equally and save on costly mistakes during construction.

  2. Check references. This will save you from the headache of learning your contractors aren't licensed or experienced in bathroom renovation.

  3. Get multiple contractors bids. This will allow you to gauge if you'll have good communication with your contractor and ensure they know the full remodel scope.

That's why we're here to walk you through every step of the process with our complete guide to planning your kitchen or bath remodel in Eugene, Oregon, from initial consultation to final sign-off.

Whether you're a homeowner who's never hired a contractor for a kitchen or bath remodel before, or you've had a negative experience in the past and want to see what our process includes, you're in the right place. At Motley, we understand that embarking on a bathroom or kitchen remodeling project can be a mix of emotions with a good dose of overwhelm.

Our goal with this guide is to better prepare you for this experience so that it's not just successful, but also enjoyable. That's why we're here to walk you through every step of the process with our complete guide to planning your kitchen or bath remodel in Eugene, Oregon, from initial consultation to final sign-off.

Creating A Plan

Understanding Your Needs and Wants

The first step in any bath remodeling project is understanding your needs and wants. This includes determining the extent of the remodel like adding more storage or expanding the existing space. A good starting point is creating the full list and then catagorizing it into the two different columns. If you are having a hard time finding inspiration or identifying what exactly you need, we can schedule a consultation with you to discuss your vision, preferences, and practical requirements.

Designing Your Dream Space

Not all kitchen remodeling contractors will have a dedicated designer that can help with kitchen design or bathroom design. So if this isn't your strong suit or you know the job is a large one, you'll want to think about hiring a designer at the beginning of the process. A designer will create a detailed floor plan to optimize functionality while incorporating your style. Their services can also include selecting the perfect color palette, choosing lighting fixtures, cabinets, sinks, faucets, tile and finishes that fit within your budget.

Setting the Scope of Work

Once your vision for your kitchen and bath is decided it'll be easier to define the scope of work. Having your kitchen design or bathroom design ready for your kitchen and bath remodeling contractor will make your consultations effective so your bids accurately reflect the full scope of the projects and remove job overages. Our goal as bathroom and kitchen remodel contractors is to create a realistic plan that aligns with your goals and budget while delivering the results you desire.

Bathroom & Kitchen Remodel Contractors

Budgeting and Getting Bids

We understand that budgeting for a new bathroom or new kitchen can be a difficult. I always suggest clients visit a kitchen or bath showroom to see the price range of cabinets and finishes to get an understanding of costs.

Getting bids is the jumping off point for getting hard numbers for your new kitchen or bathroom. This is where having your layout and scope of work will help you analyze and compare the bids your receive. We always suggest getting a minimum of 2 bids.

Choosing the Right Contractor

Choosing the right contractor for your bathroom or kitchen is essential to the success of your project. Our team of experienced contractors and designers has a proven track record of delivering high-quality results on time and on budget. We encourage you to check our credentials and read reviews from past customers to ensure that we're the right fit for your dream project.

Timeframe Expectations

One of the most common questions we receive from customers is about the timeline. On average, bathrooms can take anywhere from four to six weeks, while a kitchen may take six to eight weeks or longer, depending on the scope of work and complexity of the job. Factors that may affect the timeline include the size of the space, the extent of the projects, and any unforeseen issues that arise during remodeling.

Obtaining Permits and Approvals

Before construction can begin, it's important to obtain any necessary permits and approvals from the city or county building department. Traditionally we will handle all aspects of the permitting process, ensuring that the bathroom or kitchen layout complies with local building codes and regulations.

The Start of Your Project

Ordering Materials and Scheduling Subcontractors

Once permits have been obtained, we'll begin ordering materials and scheduling subcontractors. From cabinetry and countertops to tile and flooring. We coordinate with subcontractors to ensure that work is completed efficiently and according to schedule.

Coordination and Communication

Throughout your remodel, you should have a dedicated project coordinator who will keep you informed of progress, changes, and potential delays. Our goal is to provide clear and open communication every step of the way, so you always know what to expect and can make informed decisions.

Preparing Your Home for Remodeling

Before remodeling begins, it's important to prepare your home which may include clearing out the kitchen or bathroom, protecting belongings from dust and debris, and making temporary arrangements for cooking, bathing, and other daily activities. Our team will work closely with you to minimize disruption to your daily life and ensure a smooth transition throughout the remodeling process.

Demolition and Construction

With materials on site and subcontractors scheduled, it's time to begin the demolition and construction phase of your job. Our team will work diligently to minimize disruption to your daily life while ensuring that work is completed safely and according to schedule.

Installation of Fixtures and Finishes

As construction progresses, we'll begin installing fixtures and finishes to bring your bathroom or kitchen to life. From plumbing and electrical to cabinetry and countertops, we ensure that every detail is executed with precision and quality craftsmanship.

Final Touches and Inspections

As the project nears completion, we'll apply final finishes and details to complete the look of your new bathroom or kitchen. We'll conduct thorough inspections to verify compliance with building codes and regulations, ensuring that your remodel meets the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship.

Project Sign-Off and Warranty

Once you're satisfied with the final result, we'll review the finished with you to ensure your complete satisfaction. We'll provide warranty information and address any post-installation concerns, so you can enjoy your new space with peace of mind.

We hope this guide has been informative and helpful in making your renovation journey smooth and enjoyable. If you're ready to discuss your bathroom or kitchen remodeling project, schedule a consultation today. Let us turn your kitchen into a reality!

Navigating Your Bathroom or Kitchen Remodel with Ease

By sharing our approach here at Motley, we hope you can have a good jumping off point when screening other contractors, so you can make an informed decision before a contract is ever signed... whether here in the Eugene Oregon area or in your corner of the world.

Navigating your kitchen or bathroom remodel

Starting a bathroom or kitchen remodeling project is an exciting endeavor, but it often comes with its fair share of stress and anxiety.

By sharing our approach here at Motley, we hope you can have a good jumping off point when screening other contractors, so you can make an informed decision before a contract is ever signed... whether here in the Eugene Oregon area or in your corner of the world.

The Bathroom Remodeling Business

In the landscape of the bathroom remodeling industry you'll find contractors with varying approaches to communication and coordination. We've seen firsthand how effective communication can make or break a project. We've heard the horror stories from clients of no show contractors, dismissive attitudes toward homeowner requests, and undiscussed change orders.

We don't understand this approach as experienced bathroom remodeling contractors for a few reasons. First, being a service provider your market is local and you'll run out of work quickly. Second, you want validation that you provide a value. At least that's the foundation Nate and I want... to know at the end of the day we are contributing to our community in a positive way.

That is why your contractor needs to have an intentional system for strong communication. From the initial consultation to the final walk-through, every interaction with our clients is guided by our commitment to clear, transparent communication.

Questions to Ask Your Contractor at the Initial Meeting:

  • What is your system and how do you like to be contacted?

  • What hours are you available to be contacted?

  • Do you have a project coordinator?

Why Communication Matters

Understanding that the decision to remodel your bathroom or kitchen is a significant investment, both financially and emotionally... is something we get. We think you should be aware of the pitfalls a bathroom remodeling contractor can create if they don't have a clear communication system in place.

How Your Bathroom Remodeling Contractor Can Cost You:

  • Missed work due to miscommunication around scheduling.

  • Materials and sourcing not discussed.

  • Payment schedule not stated up front.

  • Layout details not discussed.

How You Can Communicate to Avoid Additional Costs

Even with the best of communication systems in place a contractor is in partnership with you the homeowner. As a bathroom remodel business, we are trying to carry out your vision of your space while adhering to local codes and subcontractors schedules. Your bathroom contractor needs to know materials you select well before installation. Not getting this information will cost you in either time or money.

How You Can Save Money and Time On Your Bathroom Renovation

Having conversations around the following topics will get you and your bathroom contractor off on the right foot.

Have all finishes and fixtures selected prior to final contract.

Now don't freak out... if you don't know these things at the time of your first consultation, tell your contractors. They are great resources for you to point you in the direction of where to find ALL.THE..THINGS! Also I would treat the consultation as a way to feel out if you'll be a good team and the contractor will probably provide an estimate instead of a contractual bid.

Throughly read the scope of work outlined in the contract.

The scope of work in a contract is the binding work to be performed. If you're thinking a specific task or material is going to be provided but it's not on the SOW, then the successful completion of your project is undercut.

Respond to Your Contractor

If you fail to respond to your contractor within 24 hours, chances are he will not be able to move forward. This is especially important when subcontractors are involved. Everyone is on a timeline and your project could get put on hold until they can come back to it.

The Importance of Coordination

Effective coordination is another essential aspect of a successful bathroom or kitchen remodel. With so many moving parts involved, from sourcing building materials to scheduling subcontractors, it's crucial to have a contractor that can keep everything running smoothly.

Bathroom Remodel Design Consult

The Role of The Design Consultation

A design consultation is an opportunity for the contractor to listen to your needs and desires for your bathroom or kitchen and tailor their services to meet them. At this meeting, bathroom contractors are also assessing the overall condition of your space to create a scope of work.

Now most homeowners expect a comprehensive bid in just a few days but if you are completely replacing your existing bathroom or removing structural walls, I would be patient. Now if you are doing a small bathroom with a simple shower or bath replacement your contractor should be able pull numbers form similar projects and get a bid back to you within a week or so.

Quality Materials and Workmanship

When it comes to bathroom remodels, quality shouldn't be negotiable. This starts from hiring a licensed and bonded contractor. (You can check with your state licensing board for this) Plumbing is the next area of your job where you get what you pay for. Having a contractor that knows where to save and splurge is crucial.

Managing Budget and Schedule

Budget and schedules are two of the biggest concerns for homeowners when it comes to remodeling. Having a client coordinator to providing communicate payment schedules and cost estimates upfront, so there are no surprises along the way helps you know what to expect.

Insurance and Licensing

In Oregon it's required to have a current contractors license and to display our contractor license number on all promotional material. In addition, to get a current contractors license you'll need to provide insurance and bond. If your contractor doesn't have this number, it's the first indication that they won't adhere to all state regulations and building codes.

The Finishing Touches: Fixtures and Details

As I said earlier, having the fixtures and finishes selected is a big part of the total job. This requires you to decide the tile, a bathtub of your dreams or the sink you prefer for your vanity. If the idea of deciding all these materials overwhelm you, a designer can help you find the perfect elements to suit your style and house. Matching a bathroom contractor with attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship, will bring your vision for your bathroom to life.

Client Satisfaction and Resale Value

A successful bathroom remodel is about more than just creating a beautiful space; it's about enhancing the value and functionality of your home. With the right team by your side, communication and coordination can be the keys to a successful and satisfying project. Whether you're planning to stay in your house for years to come or looking to increase its resale value, you can trust that your new bathroom will be a source of joy and pride for years to come.

Communication with your bathroom contractor

Meet Our Team: The Contractor and Designer Duo

Do you geek out on bathroom design or just looking for inspiration that's current? As residential remodeling specialists with a keen eye for design, we've seen it all – from classic elegance to modern chic – and we're here to guide you through the maze of decisions that come with a bathroom remodel. So let's dive into the bathroom trends 2024 straight from the heart of Eugene.

Understanding Design Uncertainty

Let's start by addressing a common pain point for our clients: Design Uncertainty. We get it – embarking on a bathroom remodel can easily give you decision fatigue. Tiles, fixtures, colors... It's enough to make anyone's head spin. Don't stress... Here at Motley, we stay current on everything from bathroom layout, cabinets, and all the finishing touches that make spa like bathrooms because we're here to take the overwhelm out of the equation.

The Northwest's Unique Bathroom Design Trends

We're all about staying ahead of the curve while keeping bathroom remodeling practical and down-to-earth. From organic textures to moody color palettes, when to splurge and when to save...we've got the inside scoop on what's hitting the design mark for Eugene bathrooms. Here is what we're seeing.

1. Organic Textures: Bringing Nature Indoors

Left Image Design: Olga Tolmach. /. Right Image Design: Intimatelivinginteriors Photography: Karyn Millet

We love incorporating organic textures and natural materials into our designs. Think wood accents, vein quartz countertops, and marble floor tile. Not only do these elements add warmth and character to your space, but they also bring a touch of sustainability into the mix – something we're passionate about here in Eugene. We are loving large scale wall tiles for showers with a neutral color scheme, reeded cabinets that give texture, natural stone flooring and stone bowl sinks that give your space a wow factor.

Inexpensive Ideas to Add Organic Textures to Your Bathroom

  • Wood Bathtub Tray: Not only are you upping your home spa game but adding natural wood elements to your bathroom instantly warms up your bathroom space.

  • Natural Stone or Marble Vanity Tray: Even if you have an outdated vanity, adding a vanity tray elevates your countertop and provides some organization. I love adding decorative containers to put my creams and cotton pads in.

  • Pottery Bowls or Urns: The more rustic and artisan looking the better. Again, these can be used for everyday countertop items or you can add plants to your space with the urn style vase.

  • Wood Shower Bench: This is similar to the wood bathtub tray idea but for your shower. I love ours but definitely recommend adding a coat of sealer to help with longevity.

Small Bathroom Remodel Ideas to Add Organic Texture to Your Bathroom

  • Update your Bathroom Flooring: Adding a natural stone tile to your floor or creating a unique pattern on your floor with tile is a perfect upgrade.

  • Update your Fixtures, Sink and Countertop material: Sometimes this is all you need to feel you have a fresh new bathroom. Updated fixtures, sinks and vanity countertops set the tone for the space and most vanities allow the removal of the countertops which is perfect for this quick remodeling project. I mention the sink because the vanity countertops are more than likely attached. It is often just faster easier to replace the sink than try and keep it.

  • Replace your Vanity with a Wood Vanity: This is for those that have a painted bathroom vanity or if your bathroom is still rocking the 70's wood vanities and you could use an upgrade. If you're wanting a less farmhouse and a more "Natural Organic" Interior Design vibe this is a good direction. A real wood vanity will instantly update your house and helps with the resale value however be advised that a good quality wood vanity is the most expensive option.

2. Moody Color Palettes: Setting the Mood

Left Image Design: Studio McGee. / Right Image Design: MK Interior Design Co.

A moody color scheme is all the rage right now, and for good reason. There's something undeniably cozy and inviting about deep, rich hues like charcoal, navy, and forest green... I'm even liking the neutral browns and rust. It might be a revolt from the wide open great room concepts we've been living with these last few decades. Whatever the reason this design style isn't going anywhere and really doesn't require a bathroom remodel to achieve.

Inexpensive Ideas to Add A Moody Color Scheme:

  • Paint your Bathroom Walls: This is an obvious first step. Just make sure you take in the other colors in your bathroom flooring tiles, countertop, fixtures, and yes... even your tub or shower tile wall surround. Every interior designer will tell you this is the place to start when selecting paint.

  • Paint your Vanity: Yes, I know how ya'll went crazy with the white paint and white subway tile and white cabinets in your house so I'm not saying that vibe is over. You don't have to go moody in every room, it can be for a powder room or that one bathroom that hasn't already been updated. Have a little fun with it and be bold!

  • Add Dark Bathroom Decor: This can be a simple dark stone tray or vase. Also don't be afraid of using wall art with dark colors. This moody trend goes very well with he natural organic feel... just more contrast.

  • Add a Dark Patterned Wall paper to your Bathroom: This is the highest impact to your bathroom you can add. Make sure you select wall paper that is for a bathroom. Most vinyl wall paper is rated for this space.

3. English Cottage Charm: Quaint and Cozy

Right Design: Unknown / Left Design: Hearth Homes Photography: Public 311 design

Channeling some English cottage charm in your bathroom remodel is a great way to add character into a new bathroom . We're talking quaint brass fixtures, patterned wallpaper, and a reclaimed dresser made into a bathroom vanity for that cozy, lived-in vibe that feels warm and familiar. Depending on the state of your bathroom and bathroom layout, this could be simple tweaks or a more involved bathroom remodeling venture.

Inexpensive Ideas to Add English Cottage Charm:

  • Update Your Fixtures: You'll definitely want to go with a more traditional style and extra points for a brass or copper finish. Don't overlook your shower heads, this is a great way to upgrade in both style and function. However don't be afraid to mix your fixture finishes. It adds interest to your bathroom.

  • Update your Vanity Mirror: This is your excuse to get rid of the flat pane mirror that is doing nothing for your space. It's always fun to go shopping at your local vintage shops for a good vanity mirror. Do you have a double vanity? This is the perfect bathroom upgrade to swap out your long single vanity mirror for two separate mirrors Just take measurements of your vanity cabinets... and anticipate you'll want new lighting fixtures. (If you give a mouse cheese scenario!)

  • Add Molding to your Walls: I'm a lover of board and batten trim. I like it laid out with either the chair rail or all the way to the ceiling for a small bathroom layout. Another good option for walls... hanging shiplap vertically with a chair rail. Pair this wall trim with a good olive green or warm greigy beige and you're set!

Bathroom Remodel Ideas to Add English Cottage Charm:

  • Refurbish an Antique Dresser to a Bathroom Vanity: This is stunning when done right. However finding just the right dresser that will still have features like storage space and functioning drawers is HARD! The DIY approach to this bathroom project is going to be the least expensive in regards to money but not time. We have found it is more cost effective to source a pre-fab vanity or design a custom vanity of our clients that are in love with this look.

  • Update your Soaking Tub with a Freestanding tub: Alot of you have them... those built in tubs with tiles and jets that no one cleans. Installing a freestanding tub that has a traditional form will not only transform your space but give the appearance that your bathroom floor is bigger. I also love adding statement light fixtures to a freestanding tub to add a little atmosphere.

  • Update Cabinets and Tile: Sometimes an upgrade is overdue. Cabinets and tiles are some of the best investments in a bathroom remodeling project. You can have cabinets built with timeless door styles while also incorporating the function you've been missing which is what we see our clients do often. Now the tile upgrade can be simply flooring, wall tiles or shower tiles.... it can also be all the above, but if we were your interior designer, you'd see Zellige in the mix. We love it squared, and in subway tile shape... stacked or offset. This tile is elegant and organic at the same time and won't go out of style anytime soon.

5. Minimalist and Functional Designs

Left Image: Source Unknown. / Right Image: Styling Lotta Agaton Photos Kristofer Johnsson

Streamlined cabinets and storage solutions not only maximize space but also contribute to a clean and modern style. We know you're looking for more storage space, a place to hide those hair products and increase your resale value. This is interior design style is especially popular for primary baths where you're trying to fit in a double vanity ( We love floating vanities), a toilet room, a bathtub and shower while still having floor space to service multiple people.

Our favorite elements for a modern style bathroom are hands down a freestanding tub if you have the extra space. We love a good floating vanity with either open space or a floating vanity with a shelf for ample storage. inWe excel in clever space solutions, ensuring every inch of your bathroom is utilized efficiently and brings a huge impact to your bathroom.

Inexpensive Ideas to Add Minimalist Style and Function:

  • Select a Simple Color Palette: This can be hard if you have a lot going on with your hard surfaces in your bathroom like flooring, cabinets, shower tiles, etc. However if your space is cluttered with hair products, decor, and a wild shower curtain, then this is easier and much less expensive. You'll want to pick a primary color and stay within the same undertone and shade range of that color. This will give your space dimension but also a minimalist feel.

  • Simply Declutter: Yup, I said it. Some of you have too much on your countertops. There is so many options for under sink storage on Amazon alone. Bathrooms get used by multiple people so I understand. I also recommend adding a medicine cabinet especially in a small bathroom. My favorite all around storage options are the pull out bins for under your sink. These get items off countertops. Other ideas include that I like are the clear acrylic bins for cabinets drawers.

Bathroom Remodel Ideas to Add Minimalist Style and Function:

  • Add a Bathtub Ledge: I love the clean line a bathtub ledge gives over a shower niche. It's because the continuous line isn't broken lending it to that minimalist design. This bathroom remodel will add more space to set your products on in your shower or tub. I also like that adding a ledge looks great with built in seating in a shower.

  • Add a Flat Panel Door Design to your Cabinets: If your cabinets are in good condition but you could use soft close drawers and want that minimalist look, it's a perfect time to have new fronts made for your vanity. By adding the soft close hinges you'll be saving wear and tear on your vanity. Did you know flat panel door fronts also come with the added bonus of being easy to clean. (so much easier!) You can add drawer and cabinet hardware that jazz the look up a notch or go with simple drawer pulls.

Elements I Would Include in a Complete Minimalist Bathroom Remodel?

I like the minimalist style mixed with the natural organic feel. I really believe they go together both visually but also speak to the foundation of minimalism. So if you hired me as your interior designer... this is what I would be sourcing.

  • Large scale slate floor tiles.

  • Flat front floating vanity in a wood finish, undercount sink or sinks, and honed countertop finish.

  • Slab tiles or 24" x 48" tiles for shower walls.

  • Shower and tub fixtures in chrome (Yes, chrome!)

  • Floor mats in a woven texture pattern.

  • A toilet that has clean sides.

  • Look for ways to add natural light.

  • Clean organic shaped light fixtures.

6. Vintage and Retro Revival

Left Design: Heidi Caillier Photography: Haris Kenjar. / Right Image Design: Tiffany Leigh Design

Bringing back vintage fixtures and checkered tile floor patterns adds a sense of nostalgia and charm to your bathroom remodel. By incorporating retro color schemes and accessories, we create a space that pays homage to the past while embracing modern comforts. Adding vintage to your space can be as simple as updating fixtures including your light fixtures, refurbishing cabinets with paint, or having a little fun with your tile floor which is great for a tiny bathroom. Don't forget that you can add character to your wall space with wall moldings or to explore local vintage shops for sourcing "outside of the box" unique vintage pieces for towel bars, toilet paper holder, shower curtain, or even medicine cabinets that will add character to your bathroom remodel.

Inexpensive Ideas to Add Vintage and Retro Revival:

  • A checkered bathroom floor rug: This simple pattern brings back memories to many and is possibly the mascot for a vintage retro feel. I like the cream and Carmel color combo best but it really depends on your individual bathroom. Another patterned bathroom floor rug I like is houndstooth in large scale. It's a vibe and I kinda love it.

  • Outside the Box Decor: Anything goes really but to avoid going in the kitchy direction I like to keep function at the forefront and not just decor. Think canisters that might have been used else where in a home but you can use them on your countertops. Or formal vintage paintings with ornate frames. Tap into the creative and see what you come up with.

Bathroom Remodel Ideas to Add Vintage Retro Style:

  • Retro Light Fixtures: This can be a simple swap out if you take measurements before you lay your money down. But I love the look of side light fixtures. those are the lights that are set to the left and right of the vanity mirror. I like how they anchor the room and I feel they're better for makeup application. These can be found anywhere from a second hand store to Wayfair.com.

  • Natural Stone Checkered Tiles: You can go bold with this pattern and do the traditional black and white tile or calm it down a bit with a marble grey and white tile. Depending on where tiles are installed dictates the scale and pattern orientation. For a powder room I would go with a 4-8" square and a master bathroom would have the 12".

  • Clam Shell Sinks: Crazy right! However in a small bathroom it makes a statement when you don't have much for other statement decor. In other bathroom spaces I would be selective and maybe go with an undercount clam shell sink. Now if you're worried that vintage or retro design will ver you away from timeless or upscale... don't stress. As an interior designer I know just how far to go to take a space so that it is interesting but also aligned with your personality.

7. Biophilic Design and Greenery

Left Image Design: Source Unknown / Right Image Design: ABS Boutwteam

If you're stumped on what Biophilic Design is... I'll save you the google search. "a concept used within the building industry to increase occupant connectivity to the natural environment through the use of direct nature, indirect nature, and space and place conditions". Courtesy of Wikipedia.

This boils down to bringing the outdoors in as much as possible. It can be increasing natural light while adding plants and greenery to your bathroom to not only enhances aesthetics but also creates a calming connection with nature. And if you want to get all science-y... there is a rumored report that NASA researchers claim efficient air cleaning can be accomplished with one plant per 100 sq. ft. I'm a plant gal myself so I'll take any excuse to add indoor plants or flowers to a bathroom which in turn requires more light... so windows and skylights are a natural go to. However sometimes the simplest ideas are the best finishing touches to your bathroom remodeling project.

Inexpensive Ideas to Add Biophilic Design and Greenery:

  • Plants.. Real Plants: Super easy add to any bathroom. You can place them on countertops, your window seal, and even hang them from your bathroom ceiling. Other ideas include hanging eucalyptus from your shower heads or planting a flowering shrub or tree outside your bathroom window so it's visible.

Bathroom Remodel Ideas to Add Biophilic Design and Greenery:

  • Add Windows: Depending on the location of your bathroom in regards to the exterior of your house, expanding the bedroom windows or adding windows to your bathroom will greatly increase your connection to the green spaces outside. This will also aid in making a small bathroom feel more open and spacious.

  • Add a Skylight: The objective here is to add more light so your living plants can be healthy. This will also increase the variety of house plants you can place in your bathroom. Please know however that there is varieties of plants that can live with very limited light... like 3.

8. Personalized Touches and Local Artisans

Left Image Design: Wabi.asia. / Right Image Design: Tiffany Leigh Design

Customizing features for your bathroom remodel allows you to infuse your personality into your space. This can be a custom sink made from concrete or a hand forged copper tub. It can also be small touches like supporting a small business on Etsy that sells hand soap containers. Either way we're committed to supporting local Eugene artisans and tradesman, ensuring that your remodel is truly one-of-a-kind and reflects your unique style and tastes.

Inexpensive Ideas for Artisan Touches in your Bathroom:

  • Soap Dispensers

  • Wall Art

  • Muralist for your wall space

  • Handcrafted Pottery for countertop containers.

Bathroom Remodel Ideas to Add Artisan Touches to your Bathroom remodel:

  • Custom Cabinets and Vanity

  • Handcrafted tiles

  • Concrete Countertops

  • Custom Wall Moldings

Here are some common questions I get when clients inquire about bathroom remodeling.

Now we get all types of questions about bathroom remodeling but most of you are wondering… "How do I get the feel I want?" and "What should I be budgeting for". Below are a variations of these two questions.

What if you went ALL in on white tile and the subway tile trend?

You've made a great investment! Even if you're growing tired of the all white everywhere, white tile is easy to work around in any room. Adding warmth with wood accents, wall trim, and moody paint can still be done to update your space.

What materials should I use in my bathroom remodel?

This is so dependent on the season of life you're in and which bathroom your thinking about remodeling, but I'll do my best to break it down.

  • Family with Children: Durable is the name of the game. Ceramic tiles are perfect for flooring and vanity designs that don't have a ton of crevasses. Why? Cleaning. It has to be easy to clean or no one will do it. Quartz countertops are a good choice here and on the budget friendly side, you can go with a formica product. (Hey, they have come along way from mustard yellow)

  • Powder Room: You can push the boundary line on this one even if you have kids in the house because it's a secondary bathroom. However if you're going to install wallpaper, I would do vinyl if you have kids... again because of easy cleanups.

  • Master Bathroom: Live out your dreams... but make intentional choices. Countertop material is the big decision due to how it gets used. Natural stone like marble will get etching and can be affected by acidic or oily elements... think toners and lotions. The main thing is to get educated so you'll know how to care for the materials you select.

  • Guest Bathroom: This is a mix of durable but fun. Your guest might not know to wipe up toothpaste immediately so again the countertops are to be considered but this is also a space to showcase your personality. Add wall trim or special fixtures... the options are endless.

What are the trendy bathroom colors for 2024?

Hands down I would say neutral beige or warm griege is fast replacing the grey trend. If you want more color but scared to go off the neutral path you'll be happy to know that olive green in various tones and depths if firmly being placed in the neutral category. Other trendy bathroom colors for 2024 include blues, rusts, and browns. If you need to narrow down a color palette for your specific space, give us a call and we can set up a color consult.

What color fixtures are in style for 2024?

Brass is holding strong in all its various finishes... aged brass, polished brass, etc. Another popular but more expensive color fixture for 2024 is copper. The warmth of these two finishes is rebellion to the grey period. I will say that I'm liking the pairing of all these warm colors and warm woods with a little stainless steal from time to time. When done right its fantastic.

What adds the most value to a bathroom?

I would say tile. Whether adding a new tile floor or upgrading your shower or tub tiles... it makes the biggest impact on the value of your bathroom.

What do you remodel first in a bathroom?

This largely depends on the overall condition of your bathroom. If you have good function and no water damage, then I would say either tile or vanity. However if the function is not working and you don't have the amenities you need, then I would look at the overall bathroom layout to see how extensive your bathroom remodeling project needs to be.

What is the most expensive part of a bathroom remodel?

The labor typically. The only exception is if you are doing a high end bathroom remodel. But I would still argue the labor is the largest percentage of cost due to the shortage in experienced labor.

This in-depth look at 2024 top bathroom design trends will get you pointed in the right direction.

Understanding Your Budget

Before you dive headfirst, it's crucial to have a clear understanding of what you're working with financially bathroom remodel Eugene. Your budget will serve as your guiding light throughout the process, helping you make informed decisions and avoid the reality of scope creep along the way.

Factors Affecting Costs

Let's break down the key factors that influence the cost of bathroom remodeling:

  • Size of the Bathroom: Naturally, the size of your space plays a significant role in your budget. For example primary bathrooms often require more materials, labor, and time, leading to higher costs.

  • Scope of Work: Are you looking for a complete overhaul with new fixtures, flooring, a new shower or tub, or just a cosmetic update? Each option comes with its own price tag.

  • Materials and Fixtures: The brand and quality of materials and fixtures you choose can vary greatly in cost. High-end finishes will impact your budget differently than more budget-friendly options.

  • Labor Costs: Labor costs can fluctuate depending on the complexity and customization of the project. Skilled tradespeople are essential for quality work. This is where most homeowners shouldn't compromise.

Average Bathroom Renovation Costs

To give you a better idea of what to expect, let's talk numbers. On average, a bath remodeling project in Eugene Oregon can range from $8,000 to $45,000 or more. This figure can vary widely based on the factors mentioned above.

For a moderate remodel with mid-range fixtures and materials, you're likely looking at a ballpark budget of $15,000 to $30,000. However, if you're dreams include a high-end transformation with a five piece bath, your budget may need to stretch to the higher end of the spectrum.

  • Prioritize Your Goals: Identify your top priorities for the remodel. Is it the spacious shower, a deep soaking tub, or the stunning tile work?

  • Consider Contingency Funds: It's a must to set aside a contingency fund of no less than 10% of your total budget for unexpected expenses or changes that may arise during the project.

Financial Fact: On average most homeowners will get a 70%+ return on a bathroom remodel in Eugene Oregon.

Budgeting Strategies for Bathroom Remodels

Let's dive into some strategies that will help make the most of every dollar you invest.

Prioritizing Your Goals

  • Must-Haves: These are the features or changes that you absolutely cannot compromise on. It might be expanding the shower, replacing outdated plumbing, or improving accessibility. Allocate a significant portion of your budget here.

  • Nice-to-Haves: These are the upgrades or additions that would enhance your space but aren't critical. It could be a high-end shower or custom cabinetry. Be flexible with your budget for these elements.

Obtaining Multiple Quotes

When it comes to hiring a bathroom remodeling company, don't settle for the first quote you receive. Reach out to multiple contractors to get a better understanding of the pricing landscape. A consultation is usually free.

Here are the benefits:

  • Comparison: Having multiple quotes allows you to compare not just the prices but also the scope of work included in each estimate. Just make sure the scope of work is clearly stated on the bid for easy comparison.

  • Finding A Good Fit: Having face to face conversations gives you insight as to whether you'll work well with your contractor, their communication style and how receptive they are to your vision.

Reusing and Repurposing

A budget-friendly approach to any remodel project is to consider reusing or repurposing certain elements. If your existing tub is in good condition, you can save money by keeping it and making cosmetic updates elsewhere.

DIY vs. Professional Remodeling

Consider your DIY capabilities and the complexity of the project. While DIY can save money on labor costs, some tasks are best left to professionals to ensure quality and compliance with local codes. A combination of DIY and professional work may be a budget-friendly compromise.

Bathroom Remodel Checklist

Hiring the Right Remodel Contractor

Your choice of a remodeling contractor in Eugene or Springfield is a pivotal decision that can significantly impact your project's budget and outcome.

Check References and Read Reviews

Don't skip this crucial step. Reach out to previous clients and read online reviews to gauge a contractor's reputation and quality of work. A trustworthy Eugene bathroom remodeling company should have a track record of satisfied customers.

Experience and Expertise

Consider the contractor's bathroom remodeling services. An experienced professional will have a deeper understanding of local building codes, potential challenges, and cost-effective solutions specific to Eugen or Lane County.

Communication and Project Management

Effective communication is key to staying on budget. Ask about the contractor's communication systems and processes because a well-coordinated project ensures that time and resources are utilized efficiently.

Navigating Permit Requirements

Each remodel will have specific permit requirements and staying compliant is essential to avoid penalties and delays.

Research Local Regulations

Familiarize yourself with the local regulations and permit requirements for your remodel. For Eugene contractors it is required they pull permits if you are altering the layout or altering the walls.

Permit Costs

Budget for permit costs in advance. While these fees may vary based on the scope of your project, it's essential to include them in your budget plan to avoid unexpected expenses. A good estimate is 5-10% of the total cost.

Streamlining the Permit Process

A seasoned contractor with experience in Eugene and Springfield can navigate the permit process efficiently, saving you time and stress.

By understanding and adhering to the local permit requirements, you can keep your project on track without unforeseen budget hiccups.

Budgeting Pitfalls to Avoid

The last four years we have seen the price of labor and materials change dramatically so try to avoid the following pitfalls so your project is a success.

Not Accounting for Contingencies

A contingency fund is your safety net for unexpected expenses. The contingency fund is used for unforeseen issues that were unknown at the time of bidding. This can be dry rot in sub flooring or plumbing that needs to be updated. You can also use this fund for upgrades or change orders due to scope of work changes. Skipping this step can leave you financially vulnerable when surprises arise.

Scope Creep

Scope creep is where additional features or changes are added after the initial bid and during the project . While some adjustments are inevitable, excessive changes will increase your budget.

Sacrificing Quality for Savings

While it's essential to budget wisely, cutting corners on quality materials or workmanship may lead to repairs down the road. Be aware of Eugene bathroom remodelers that give low bids. Often times they will come back with multiple change orders or run out of money before your project is completed due to their lack of experience with bathroom remodeling.

Noah Certified Tiny Homes for sale...This is the Standard.

If you're looking for a tiny home that's built to high standards and certified by NOAH, the NOAH Certified tiny Home is an excellent choice. These homes are designed and built with quality and safety in mind, using durable materials and expert craftsmanship. With features like energy-efficient appliances, customizable layouts, and modern design elements, these homes offer everything you need to live comfortably in a small space. Plus, with NOAH certification, you can rest assured that your home meets the highest standards of safety and quality. So if you're ready to make the move to tiny living, the NOAH Certified tiny Home is definitely worth considering.

With any new housing trend, and especially a trend that began in the DIY arena, there are some concerns about safety and quality for this alternative housing option. That's where NOAH Certification comes in.

What is NOAH?

NOAH Certifications is a national organization that specializes in inspecting tiny houses on wheels to ensure they meet the ANSI 119.5 safety standards combined with the IRC Appendix Q codes for tiny homes. Whether you're looking to build or purchase a tiny home, having a NOAH certification can not only give you peace of mind but smooth the road for insurance and placement.

Their team of trained professionals that come with a long list of credentials inspect every aspect of the tiny house, from the walls to the electrical system to the plumbing, so you can be assured your tiny home is safe and reliable.

The NOAH Standard

Tiny home on wheels construction has been categorized as an RV across most jurisdictions. Because of this, professional builders follow the ANSI 119.5 code for RV manufacturing.

The NOAH certified home standard goes farther. Taking the ANSI 119.5 standard of fuel systems and equipment, health, fire and life safety, plumbing systems and construction requirements then add NFPA 70 (National Electric Code) for the electrical with special attention to Article 551 and 552 (RVs and PMRVs). NFPA 1192 for park models.

And because tiny homes are largely constructed like traditional housing, they incorporate the International Residential Code (IRC) Appendix Q code. A builder must adhere to these codes to be a NOAH certified home.

NOAH Inspections

  • Tyvek Vapier Barrier

  • Window Flashing

  • Z Metal Flashing

Noah certified tiny houses are inspected at 5 different stages of construction.

  1. Trailer Inspection: Electric brakes, axles, and turn signal lights.

  2. Framing: Securing the framing to the trailer, hurricane ties at both bottom and top framing plates, rafter ties, loft framing and quality of framing material.

  3. Rough Electrical: The electrical panel is inspected for both 30 amp or 50amp, main disconnect, spacing of outlets, GFCI outlets, and wired smoke detectors.

  4. Rough Plumbing: Water lines are pressure tested, waste water lines are checked and gas piping is tested to hold 3 lbs of pressure for 10 minutes.

  5. Insulation and Dry-In: House wrap, floor insulation, wall insulation, ceiling insulation, window and wall flashing, and the roof is inspected.

  6. Final: Confirms Appendix Q standards, lofts have two means of egress, ventilation to the outside is inspected, water supply, ridge caps, drip edges, flashing, finish electrical and windows ... making sure the flush toilet actually works and your mini split is functioning.

*Note: Carpentry and finishes are not included in the inspection to qualify as a NOAH certified tiny house.

Why The Seal Matters

A NOAH certified tiny house can make the transition to tiny house living much easier. Insurance has been a headache for most trying to live tiny but with a NOAH certified tiny house many insurance companies easily cover your investment.

We are also taking note that some jurisdictions are requiring the NOAH standard for you to place your tiny home legally.

Rough Plumbing & Electrical

These two inspections are critical to the safety and quality of your tiny home. We can find leaks and ensure our wiring is to code.

How to Identify a NOAH Certified Tiny House

  • The NOAH standard requires railings on lofts and hand rails on stairs.

  • Always look at the bathroom. Outlets are not to be placed near water sources unless they are GFCI outlets.

  • Gable roofs need to have ceiling collar ties for strength.

  • The space in front of the electrical panel must be 24".

  • Exterior trim and flashing is sealed.

Here you see collar ties in the framing, proper insulation for the walls and ceiling and a full egress skylight in the loft.

Why we only sell NOAH Certified Tiny Houses

We quickly learned building a tiny house didn't have much, if any regulation. NOAH brought the best of RV and traditional building codes together and gave us a blueprint as builders for our first tiny house model.

It allowed us to space plan, design a functioning bathroom, and account for a skylight in the loft.

3 Small Kitchen Ideas that give all the feels!

When every square foot counts you want to love all of them…right?

Having a small kitchen doesn’t have to be minimal… or even basic. It can be filled with things you love and that happen to be useful for everyday living. By being more intentional with what you have will create a kitchen that begs to be enjoyed.

Small Kitchen Idea #1: Jazz up the mundane.

Take the items that we all use but aren’t exceptionally pretty and make them pretty. I’m talking about cooking oil, cutting boards, and dish soap. Switching out these items into beautiful containers makes your small space feel special. It also declutters the space without even moving things off your counter.

Why?

All the different colors and graphics on the labels are designed to grab your attention from the shelf (at the grocery store) but it also carries that effect to your countertops. By creating some cohesiveness with your containers, your eye is now taking in the space as a whole and not all the items within it.

Here, Let me show you…

Instead of trying to find space to store your everyday cleaning & cooking supplies now you can have them on the counter. Your kitchen will look nice and tidy and you’ll still have everything at arms reach. Wahlaa!

Want to find some great containers? Here are some of my favorits…check these out!

Small Kitchen Idea #2:
Buy what you love… just buy less!

We all do it… see something we would love to have, take one look at the price and return it to the shelf. Well one advantage we have by living in small spaces… you don’t need a million of them!

Take dishes for example. I love pottery, I love the organic shapes, the glazing… just love love love it! If you go to any festival where handmade plates, garaffes, or urns are made you know they are NOT cheap. I could not afford to purchase a 12 place setting. Period the end!

However, living in a small space means I’m not entertaining 12 people and I’ll be honest… if I was, we would be using disposable everything. So really I only need 6 settings (we have 5 in our family)… 8 settings if I want company. Now if you live in a movable tiny home… cut that to 4.

I should also note I have open shelving… and I know I’m not alone. Displaying dishes isn’t a must but I do think it’s a fun opportunity to display what you enjoy. So don’t settle for all white dishes, or hand-me-downs if what you really want is something else. Pair down and start collecting what you’re drawn to. (sorry if I offended white dish people… if you love it, you love it!)

Being intentional can be a full experience. One that surrounds us with useful items that are equally helpful and inspiring.

Here is an awesome example of the pottery dishes that look fantastic on open shelves...and right up my alley!

Credit: www.feinkock.com … This is not a US retailer… but was used for example only.

Small Kitchen Idea #3: Think outside the drawer.

Not everything needs to be tucked away… use it to add dimension to your kitchen decor.

What am I talking about? Utencils, spice containers, and cookbooks. I’m sure your thinking… does she put anything away? Yep, I do and I have no appreciation for cluttered countertops. However the reality is, I have a small kitchen and not enough drawers and storage. So I’ve come up with ways to make my everyday items look like decor. I don’t have anything in my kitchen that doesn’t get used regularly or have at least 2 functions.

I don’t even have a utensil drawer… Nope. I use an urn like container for all spatulas, wisks, and wooden spoons. It’s so handy next to the stove and the urn adds character to the kitchen.

You can do this with spices and even your cookbook collection (given they are limited and not extensive)

Style Hint: I like to take 2-3 cookbooks and place a bookend with them on my open shelf. This ads interest to your kitchen. I’ve included some fun ones below.

Credit: Vellabox.com … This company is a candle subscription service. Really cool…Check them out!
